OBJECTIF DU POSTE : The Auxiliary Operator is responsible for assisting in the operation and routine preventive/predictive maintenance of the power plant systems, including Chilled water and Wastewater systems and material handling systems equipment. He or she will record operational data and report any abnormalities.

This is a position attached to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Veolia and the International Union of Operating Engineers – Local 39.

PRINCIPALES FONCTIONS / RESPONSABILITÉS

  • Start, stop, regulate, monitor and control boilers, chillers, filter plant, and all auxiliary equipment.
  • Check and adjust related set points within administrative guidelines to optimize plant performance and reliability.
  • Observer, enregistrer et interpréter les indications des systèmes d'instrumentation et de contrôle. Calculer, évaluer et rapporter les résultats.
  • Perform functional testing of plant systems and components. Interpret acceptability of data in comparison with established standards or sound power plant practices.
  • Assist in the investigation of plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, and provide analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow up plans.
  • Determine the need for and perform routine operational tests and adjustments on all power plant systems and components as required.
  • When properly trained or supervised, perform tests, in or out of the laboratory, on steam, water, and other samples.
  • Check daily consumption rates of chemicals, fuels, and water; monitor inventories and initiate action to replenish same.

  • Perform routine preventive and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment; support corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised.
  • Organiser occasionnellement des formations sur le lieu de travail et en classe. Préparer des plans de cours, des documents, des aides visuelles, des examens, des normes de qualification et d'autres documents liés à la formation et au développement des employés.
  • Maintain logs, records, and data sheets; prepare reports, time sheets, material requisitions, work orders, and other administrative documents related to the business of power and steam production.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the Operations Manager, Shift Supervisor, Control Room Operator, and Plant Operator regarding the technical and administrative conduct of shift operations.
  • Communicate with other Company personnel on site and at other locations. Interface with and represent the Company in its relations and communications with the public, steam and power customers, vendors, contractors, regulators, and other non-Company personnel.
  • Communicate with and support the Administration, and Maintenance departments in fulfilling their goals and objectives.
  • The Auxiliary Operator serves as a member of the Plant’s emergency response team, when applicable
  • Display professional behavior at all times.

EXIGENCES PHYSIQUES / ENVIRONNEMENT DE TRAVAIL

  • Physical requirements include: working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. “On call” status will periodically be required.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shift-work.

Qualifications

Formation / Expérience / Antécédents

  • Diplôme d'études secondaires ou équivalent.

Connaissances / compétences / aptitudes

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in the English language and perform mathematical computations; high school diploma (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Two (2) years Operator experience in a power plant or industrial environment; technical training and previous success in performing technical functions in a utility plant environment preferred.
  • Ability to learn the principles and operations of power plant equipment.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermodynamics, chemistry and metallurgy.
  • Ability to understand and read mechanical and electrical drawings such as PI&Ds, single-line diagrams, schematics and logics.
  • Knowledge of power plant safety, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards and other devices associated with power plant and material handling equipment, as well as basic hand, portable and pneumatic tools and basic rigging equipment.
  • Demonstrated excellent communications skills with all levels of organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and coordinate work with others on technical and non-technical subjects across job families.
