A Day in the Life of Veolia Employees

"I never feel rushed, even during rush hour"

Being a truck driver means sometimes running into an unexpected turn of events. If there’s a lot of traffic, or an accident, or bad weather, I call my boss and tell him the situation. And there’s always an understanding.

Outside of that, if there’s ever an issue with my truck that could put myself or others in danger, the response is always: get it fixed. It’s never, “oh, but can you try to drive on that just a bit farther.” No. It’s just get it fixed.

Part of my job is getting the materials from point A to point B on a schedule. But if something out of my control is going to affect that, my boss never makes me feel rushed. Safety for myself and others is always the #1 priority. It’s just part of the culture here.

– James, CDL Driver

"I feel like the company is always doing the right thing"

I’m always surprised when I see an email about another community sponsorship event that we put together, whether it’s a household hazardous waste event, or a community outreach program.

They care about us and what we’re supposed to be doing. And to be successful here, all you need to do is care. It’s about wanting to be part of the solution rather than the problem.

I have two kids. My drive is to make sure that I’m doing something to make their tomorrow better. I don’t want it to sound too future-thinking, but it’s really important that we’re just doing something good.

– Amanda, Material Handler

"It's OK to make mistakes. We all support each other."

We’re looking for people who want to learn and try new things. That means you’re going to make mistakes. And we’re OK with that because we’re a team. As a team, we all learn and grow together.

None of us believe in that old school mentality that we need to protect our work and how we do things from others. No, it’s very open and honest. If I have a better way to do something, I talk to my co-workers about it. They do the same with me.

When we hire new people, we all share the best ways to do our jobs. Because that helps all of us as a team.

– Cecil, Material Handler
