Job Description
Position Purpose:
Provide strategic leadership and operational excellence for all Transportation and Disposal functions
across Environmental Solutions and Services (ESS), with specific focus on hazardous waste
transportation safety, compliance, and efficiency. This executive position is responsible for developing
comprehensive transportation policies, implementing advanced logistics and disposal systems,
optimizing fleet operations, and establishing effective operating models that ensure regulatory
compliance while meeting business objectives and customer requirements. The role requires
establishing key performance indicators, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborating
with ESS Branch Operations to achieve operational efficiency, and cost control in the specialized field of
hazardous waste transportation. Success in this position directly impacts the company’s safety record,
environmental compliance, customer satisfaction, and financial performance.
Primary Duties /Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement strategic transportation improvement initiatives to optimize logistics operations and enhance safety, compliance, and financial efficiency
- Drive safety improvement programs across ESS
- Lead a team of logistics, transportation and supply chain experts
- Lead transportation programs including internalization, Electronic Logging Devices (ELD), Freight Pay and Audit (FP&A), contract maintenance, and fuel rebate initiatives
- Direct transportation sourcing strategies including RFP development, vendor negotiations, and performance monitoring
- Drive implementation of Element Fleet Management system and Transportation Management Software (TMS) across operations
- Establish and lead Transportation Control Tower for comprehensive oversight of operations, incl asset trackers, utilization, replacement
- Optimize rail service initiatives and disposal pricing while maintaining carrier relationships
- Develop transportation policies to manage operational, regulatory and financial risks
- Lead Fleet Asset Management and Replacement Strategy development
- Drive strategic cost optimization for waste disposal, shifting from reactive price negotiations to strategic sourcing and relationship management
- Manage waste flows and coordinate with facilities during annual kiln shutdowns
- Drive and oversee the company’s disposal internalization strategy, evaluating opportunities across the enterprise to optimize the balance between owned and third-party disposal facilities
- Negotiate best rates for the organization and sustainable partnerships with disposal outlets
Work Environment:
Individuals would work in an office environment with significant travel required spending time with Key Suppliers, ESS Operations, and VNA Corporate.
Qualifications
Education / Experience / Background:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Environmental Science, or related fields.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in Supply Chain Management/Sourcing, Transportation and Logistics, and Hazardous Waste Management/ RCRA and DOT regulations and Operation
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Hazardous Waste Industry knowledge along with an understanding of general waste types and appropriate technologies for disposal and recycling. Operational knowledge of all modes of transportation including trucking, rail, and ocean transport. Basic understanding and familiarity with Legal Contracts/ Agreements.
- Leadership, Business planning, Strategic Sourcing, Organizational ability to manage multiple projects / initiatives. Strong communication skills, verbal and written. Proficiency with Microsoft office and Google platform. Financial analysis for ROI. Ability to self-direct.
- Strategic negotiation, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills.
Required Certification / Licenses / Training:
- Annual OSHA, DOT, and RCRA refresher training.
